The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is thrilled to be among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2013 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Richard Kind
Nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play, The Big Knife
"It's a huge day! Who knew!? I've got people calling who I did summer stock with 20 years ago! I get congratulations coming in; it's unbelievable. I swear, I haven't even called my mother, and I'm scared because I go onstage tonight and I've got to save my voice. It's nuts! The nominations came out and as I'm sitting in the car, I am inundated with phone calls. I had no idea that they were announced at the time or anything like that! I get to the studio [for a previously scheduled appearance on Good Morning New York] and then I realize, 35 minutes after the nominations, I'm already on TV! I thought, this is the most disgusting display of campaigning I've ever heard in my life! 35 minutes and I'm already on TV. So I apologized: 'I'm sorry, please know that I did not know that I would be campaigning so soon!' I'm a Tony nominee! It's unbelievable. If I die tomorrow, my New York Times obituary will be 'Tony nominee Richard Kind.' That's good enough for me."
